Let me repeat: “Women get exposed to about 200 chemicals daily before leaving their home” If that doesn’t scare you, I am not sure what will!
Most people feel safe at home and so it should be. However, unfortunately, we cannot avoid the fact that we should re-think that and take adequate measures. We aren’t that safe at home and the culprits are chemicals. They are everywhere in your home and environment. We can’t see them, yet they are here, ready to intoxicate us.

Why should we be conscious and avoid being exposed to chemicals?

Most chemicals have been linked to serious health conditions from small symptoms like headaches and lack of energy to the top of the ladder in health problems, cancer!

And yes, we are talking here about chemicals found in commonly approved products people use every day!

In fact, by the time a woman leaves her home in the morning, she has already been exposed to about 200 chemicals, a real cocktail of harmful chemicals found in beauty and personal products, in food like artificial sweeteners and preservatives, cleaning products, building material of the house like paint or floorings*, plastics, material used for clothing** and this is not an exhaustive list.

And even more, you know those nice smells like laundry fresh, new house, new car, perfume,…? Those all are chemical loaded cocktails!

What impact can the exposure to those chemicals have on our health?

All kind of symptoms like :

  • skin rashes
  • eye irritation
  • burning eyes, throat and nose
  • nausea
  • fertility issues
  • asthma
  • chronic pain and illnesses
  • mental health issues
  • low energy and brain fog
  • weak immune system
  • or even illnesses like Parkinson’s and cancer
  • and so much more.

I don’t know you but personally, but I don’t find this too appealing!

As we, unfortunately, cannot avoid all chemicals, we can however considerably reduces the amount of nastiness we are daily exposing our body.

Why am I passionate about clean living?

I am not an expert by all means. However, I can share with you my own experience.

I started becoming aware of the issue and looking into it back in 2011 when our oldest son Kilian got diagnosed with ADHD at the young age of 6.

My son’s doctor and therapist were very keen to suggest medication right away. Something that was not making us parents jump for joy. Although we had zero alternatives to meds yet, we decided not to medicate him right away, we had this gut feeling something better was out there.  All I knew then, was that I wanted to know why –  what triggers the condition, what makes it worse, what helps, what doesn’t, etc before to make any choice.

When you start looking into correlations between nasty chemicals and health issues, it’s like opening Pandora’s box. You better be prepared for the ride or have help. I must admit that my start in the adventure was far from ideal and simple. Now I know that I did hugely overcomplicate everything and lost many precious hours of my life trying to play potions by making my own “everything”. From laundry powder to sunscreen, shampoo and toothpaste, all kind of crazy food like butter and Nutella. Honestly, I was exhausting myself. I was scared of chemicals, they were making my baby sick after all!

What changed for us as we started living clean?

Anyways, long story made short, meanwhile, I have learned and educated myself. Thankfully, I have found easier ways to make sure to avoid as many chemicals as possible without feeling like a crazy lady. By taking those chemicals out of our lives one by one, we slowly noticed changes. Huge changes in our son Kilian but also in all of us. Kilian was becoming less anxious, could sleep better, his asthmas was getting less present, his eczema was diminishing and his ADHD was becoming more and more manageable!

I got rid of my candida overgrowth, skin issues, backaches, low energy, brain fog and so much more. Nolan’s digestive issues have improved drastically, as we found out he is especially prone to react to chemicals in food. Neela’s skin rashes started to disappear. Although they can come back if she is exposed to harmful chemicals her body doesn’t tolerate, like in sunscreen for example.

And even my, at first sceptical, husband Yan had to admit that he can notice a big difference in his overall wellbeing and health.

It’s been now almost 8 years. My paranoia of chemicals has gradually changed into a lifestyle and I am now totally serein about it. Thank goodness! Please avoid my mistakes, do not become paranoid.

What can you do to start living cleaner?

Honestly, it’s all about little steps, one by one. No rush. Please do not get sucked into the spiral of perfection. As you will never be able to avoid all chemicals.

  • Start with small things like your personal care products you are using the most. Toothpaste and deodorant, shampoo and soap are amongst the principal culprits. They also are fairly simple to swap for a safer option.
  • Check your cleaning products and find a safe brand
  • Use natural perfume
  • If possible, consider seeing a naturopath instead of or in conjunction with your doctor (depends on your condition of course!)
  • Start eating real food, replace one food item at a time, don’t go overboard or you will be overwhelmed
  • Use natural alternatives when possible, don’t be shy to ask your doctor or pharmacist

Based on my experience and researches, I am persuaded that chemicals can trigger ADHD. I see and experience it first hand with my son daily. The fewer chemicals he is exposed to, the better he feels. For me, it doesn’t make any doubts that avoiding chemicals and living a cleaner lifestyle has the potential to reduces illnesses and symptoms.
